Wheelchair Van

 Learn about Wheelchair Vans HERE.

Today, I am driving a hearing impaired friend to the hearing aid dispenser to get her new hearing aid.  I have realized that so many disabled people and elderly people are not able to drive themselves to places they need to go. Some don’t make enough to afford a car of their own. Some are not safe or capable drivers because of their disabilities. And others just don’t have a car that will accommodate them like a wheelchair van.

That’s why the contest from the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association is such a great opportunity!

National Mobility Awareness Month is April, 2016.  The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is again conducting a contest where eligible entrants can win a wheelchair van worth $50,000. They are awarding three wheelchair accessible vehicles: one to a caregiver, one to a senior (60+), and one in the general category.  The Tampa, Florida organization has conducted this contest for several years by asking for nominations for “Local Heroes” across the country that deserve the gift of a modified van.

You might know a mobility challenged individual who could benefit from a van that is designed to be wheelchair accessible.   This person could be a disabled person, a disabled senior, a caregiver for a disabled individual, or a child with a mobility disability who needs appropriate transportation.

Nominate that person in the Local Heroes contest which is coming up this spring in April, National Mobility Awareness month.  The contest is open to legal permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada, except for Quebec, who have internet access and are of legal age.

Over 18 million people in North America are living with restrictive mobility issues.

So during March, start by reading the rules,  getting the application, and preparing photos, videos and audio with a written essay that tells about the Local Hero and his/her need for a wheelchair accessible van.  See the rules for the contest here.

Entries may be submitted by the entrant, by a caregiver, or by a third party on  the website, beginning on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 and continuing for a total of fifty (50) days concluding on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.  If an entry is submitted on behalf of a third party, a signed Third Party Consent Form must be returned with the Entry. One entry per person, family or organization is permitted. If there are multiple entries for the same person, votes will not be combined.

Potential Winner(s) will be notified by phone on or about June 20, 2016.    Winning names will be posted on the website within three weeks after Prize is awarded and accepted.

You can vote for the person you want to win a wheelchair van once per email address every 24 hours at the website from May 3 to May 31.  So, if you enter, enlist your friends, neighbors, Facebook friends, church members, co-workers,  doctor’s office staff, and whoever you can think of to vote for you to win that wheelchair van.

The motto of the NMEDA is “Life Moving Forward”.
